A maternity photoshoot documents one of the most significant transitions in a person's life — the final weeks of pregnancy before everything changes. For the images to show the bump at its most rounded, the light at its most beautiful, and the experience at its most meaningful, the timing, location, and session structure all matter. Here is what you need to know.
The most flattering and photogenic period for a maternity session is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage the bump is clearly visible and prominently rounded, but the mother is not yet uncomfortable, breathless, or at risk of early labour. Walking, changing positions, sitting on the ground, and being active are all manageable at 28-34 weeks in a way that becomes progressively more difficult beyond 36 weeks.
Book your session at 28-30 weeks to allow flexibility — if you go into labour early or feel unwell, you have rescheduling options. If you leave booking to 36+ weeks, the window is very small and any complications close it entirely.
Both work beautifully with the right planning. Indoor sessions — particularly in-home sessions — give the most personal and intimate images: a maternity shoot in your own home, in the room where the baby will sleep, with morning light from your own windows, has an authenticity no studio can replicate. Studio sessions provide more controlled light and more background variety, with the ability to create dramatic lit portraits regardless of weather.
Outdoor sessions benefit from soft light (overcast days are genuinely better than bright sunshine for maternity photography) and from the seasonal character of the landscape. Bluebell woods in April-May, golden wheat fields in July-August, and autumn woodland in October-November all provide seasonal beauty that tells the story of when these photographs were taken, which is part of their future value.
Flowing maxi dresses that show the bump clearly are the most consistently successful maternity photography outfits — fabrics with gentle movement give the images life and allow the form of the pregnancy to be visible without being clinical. Bring two outfit options: one more formal (a flowing gown or wrap dress) and one more casual (a comfortable fitted T-shirt and jeans that show the bump). The combination gives your final gallery variety and shows the different aspects of the experience.
Partner involvement portraits — hands on the bump, sharing a quiet moment, looking at each other rather than the camera — are consistently among the most beloved maternity images. If you have older children, including their wonder and curiosity about the bump creates images that document not just the pregnancy but the whole family's beginning of anticipation.
