Northumberland is England's most remote and least-visited county — empty beaches stretching for miles, Hadrian's Wall crossing the wild uplands, medieval castles on dramatic headlands, and the ancient landscape of the Cheviot Hills. For wedding photography, Northumberland offers a combination of wild grandeur and human history that is completely unlike anywhere else in England.
Northumberland's population is the lowest of any English county — and this shows in its landscape. The beaches at Bamburgh, Seahouses, and Beadnell are genuinely empty on weekdays and even many weekends. The Northumberland coast AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) runs from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Amble without interruption — dunes, rock platforms, offshore islands, and the succession of magnificent castles on their headlands.
The Northumberland National Park in the interior — the most sparsely populated National Park in England — covers the Cheviot Hills and the vast moorland plateau of the Borders. Kielder Forest, the Coquet Valley, the Roman Wall corridor — each offers completely different landscape photography. Northumberland also has consistently high rates of clear, dark-sky nights — which can extend a wedding day into extraordinary dusk and Milky Way photography if the timing and conditions align.
Edwardian country house in the Tyne Valley with 1,000 acres of parkland, two championship golf courses, and one of Northumberland's most complete country house hotel facilities.
Victorian Hall with a beautiful orangery and walled garden — the estate setting between Hadrian's Wall and the Tyne Valley gives photographs with a genuinely historic Northumberland character.
A genuine 14th-century fortified tower house in the Tyne Valley, intact enough to host wedding ceremonies and dinners within its original medieval walls.
Arts and Crafts country house in the Jesmond Dene woodland gorge in Newcastle — woodland garden portraits within the city give an unexpectedly beautiful contrast to the urban setting.
A 15th-century fortified peel tower on the Northumberland coast above Craster harbour and the famous kippers smokehouse — intimate, dramatic, and with Dunstanburgh Castle visible across the headland.
England's most dramatically sited castle — see the dedicated guide. Available for private events and wedding receptions.
The Northumberland coast requires specific mention as a portrait landscape. From Berwick-upon-Tweed south to Amble, the combination of empty dune-backed beaches, dramatic headland castles, offshore islands (the Farne Islands with their puffin colonies), and the extraordinary quality of the North Sea light creates conditions for coastal photography of genuine world-class quality. Holy Island (Lindisfarne), accessible by causeway from the mainland at low tide, adds the extraordinary element of medieval priory ruins in a tidal island setting. The causeway approach — with the island floating across the sand — is one of the most dramatic drives in England.
Hadrian's Wall — the Roman frontier fortification running 73 miles across the neck of England — crosses Northumberland's most dramatic upland landscape. The central section (around Housesteads, Vindolanda, and Sycamore Gap — now a tree stump following the November 2023 felling — photographed with the famous lone sycamore tree for many years) is accessible open access land. The wall on the whin sill crags, with the landscape of the Tyne Valley behind, provides some of the most historically resonant portrait settings in England.
