Guildford is Surrey’s county town — a medieval market town above the River Wey at the crossing of the North Downs, with a high street of commercial townscape running steeply up from the river to the ruins of a twelfth-century castle. It sits at the heart of the Surrey Hills AONB, which covers a broad swathe of chalk and greensand countryside between the M25 and the Sussex border — country house venues, ancient woodland, open downland and the remarkable North Downs ridgeline walking from Box Hill to the Hog’s Back. Guildford’s Venues and the Surrey Hills AONB
Guildford Cathedral, completed in 1961 on Stag Hill above the town, is a large twentieth-century building in a simplified Romanesque style that provides an unusual modern-classical wedding ceremony venue with panoramic views over the Surrey Hills from its elevated hilltop position. The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre on the Wey provides a riverside cultural venue with water-reflection portrait opportunities in the adjacent mill pool. Within the Surrey Hills AONB, Hatchlands Park in East Clandon provides a National Trust Georgian house and grounds venue; Great Fosters in Egham — a Grade I listed Elizabethan manor with moat, formal garden and a converted tithe barn wedding venue — is within the county’s eastern fringe. The Pepper Box Inn near Milford, the Manor House at Newlands Corner and a cluster of converted barn venues in the Chilworth and Shere area provide more rural alternatives.
The North Downs, Box Hill and the Sussex Border
The North Downs ridgeline above Guildford provides open chalk grassland with views south across the Weald to the South Downs in clear conditions — a walking ridge of the kind that is instantly recognisable as the Surrey countryside of countless English landscape paintings. Newlands Corner above Merrow is the most accessible viewpoint and provides open downland portrait locations above the town. Box Hill, fifteen minutes east of Guildford, rises to 224 metres and provides National Trust-managed chalk grassland, ancient yew woodland and the stepping stone pools of the River Mole below the hill — a range of natural landscape settings within a short distance of any Surrey venue.
