You arrive across the drawbridge to a building that has stood, double-moated, since the thirteenth century — the childhood home of Anne Boleyn — and the day immediately takes on a sense of occasion that needs no staging. My job is simply to follow it. I work in a quiet, documentary way: watching for the held breath before a first look, the laughter that runs round a table, the way late light catches the still water of the moat. I am not there to pose you for hours; I am there to remember the day as it actually happened. Hever rewards photographers who pay attention. The contrast of warm Tudor timber and cool clipped yew, the long formal lines of the Italian Garden against the loose softness of the rose beds, the lake opening out beyond the maze — it is a place of textures and edges, and I shoot to honour them. A brief history of Hever Castle
Hever Castle began life in the thirteenth century as a fortified, double-moated manor house, its gatehouse and drawbridge built for defence. It is best known as the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII, and the place has carried that Tudor story for five centuries — its timbered rooms and the Long Gallery still evoke the world she grew up in. By the early twentieth century the castle had fallen into disrepair, and it was the American-born millionaire William Waldorf Astor who rescued it. From the 1900s Astor restored the medieval castle with extraordinary care and laid out the grounds that visitors love today, including the celebrated Italian Garden created to display his collection of classical sculpture, and the great lake beyond. Today Hever is a wedding venue of rare atmosphere: a genuine medieval castle ringed by water, set in gardens that range from the formal Italian Garden to the rose garden and the yew maze. For photography it offers an almost unmatched variety of backdrops within a single estate — Tudor interiors, classical statuary, clipped topiary and open water — all within a few minutes' walk.
