The Short Answer
A cake smash is a celebratory first-birthday photoshoot built around one wonderfully messy moment: your baby meeting a small decorated cake and digging in with both hands. The session usually opens with clean 'before' portraits while your little one is fresh and curious, moves into the cake itself, and ends with a warm bath-splash finish to rinse off the icing. The whole point is to capture honest, unposed reactions — the cautious first poke, the gleeful handfuls, the sticky smiles — rather than a perfectly staged scene.
When Is the Best Age for a Cake Smash?
The sweet spot is typically 11–14 months, right around your baby's first birthday. By this age most babies can sit confidently and are curious enough to reach out and explore the cake, but they're not yet so mobile that they'll crawl straight off the set. Younger than about 10 months and they may not engage with the cake at all; much older and toddlers can become more cautious or simply uninterested in making a mess. If your little one is an early or late developer, that's absolutely fine — we just plan the timing around them rather than a strict date.
What Actually Happens During the Session?
We usually start with a few clean portraits of your baby in a simple outfit against a tidy backdrop, capturing those bright pre-cake expressions. Then the cake comes out, and we let your child set the pace — some dive straight in, others need a gentle demonstration of a finger swiped through the icing. I photograph throughout, staying low and quiet so the reactions stay natural. Once the smashing winds down, many families finish with a bath or splash setup, which doubles as adorable bubble photos and a practical way to clean up before heading home.
Who Provides the Cake and the Setup?
Arrangements vary by photographer, so it's worth confirming in advance. I'll talk you through colours, themes and any dietary needs (egg-free, dairy-free and simple sponge options are all common), and we'll agree whether you bring the cake or I arrange a small one for you. Backdrops, a clean floor covering, props and the splash finish are part of the studio setup. A simple, low-sugar smash cake is genuinely fine for this — it's about the photos and the fun, not feeding a crowd.
How Should I Dress My Baby?
Keep it simple and comfortable. A cute outfit you don't mind getting messy works well, or many families choose a themed romper, a tutu, or even just a nappy and a milestone sticker. Avoid anything too fussy or tight that might irritate your baby once it's covered in icing. It's a good idea to bring a spare outfit and a towel, and to dress your little one in something easy to take off for the bath-splash portion. Bare feet and chubby legs always photograph beautifully.
How Long Does a Cake Smash Take?
Plan for roughly an hour to ninety minutes, though we always work to your baby's mood rather than the clock. Babies this age have short windows of good humour, so I keep things relaxed and unhurried, with room for a feed, a cuddle or a quick reset if needed. Booking a session shortly after a nap, when your little one is rested and fed but not overtired, usually gives the happiest results. If the cake stage doesn't go to plan on the day, we simply lean into the portraits and the splash — there's always a lovely set to come home with.
Is a Cake Smash Worth It?
For a once-in-a-lifetime milestone, many parents find it absolutely worth it. A first birthday passes in a blur, and a cake smash captures your baby's personality at a specific, fleeting age — the curiosity, the joy, sometimes the comically unimpressed face. The images make wonderful prints, gifts for grandparents, and a keepsake you'll treasure long after the icing is forgotten. If a full smash isn't your thing, a gentler 'cake nibble' or a straightforward first-birthday portrait session can capture the same milestone with less mess.
