The Short Answer
A milestone baby photoshoot is a series of sessions that documents a baby at the key stages of their first year. Rather than a single sitting, it captures how quickly a little one changes — usually starting with the newborn stage, then the sitter stage at around six to nine months, and finishing on or near the first birthday. Photographed in the same warm, documentary style, the images build into a story of a whole year rather than one frozen moment.
The Three Classic Milestones
Most milestone packages are built around three natural stages. The newborn session happens in the first couple of weeks, when babies are still sleepy and curl up easily. The sitter session, typically between six and nine months, is photographed once a baby can sit unsupported but isn't yet crawling away — full of gummy smiles and personality. The cake smash or first-birthday session marks the year, often with a small cake to make a mess of. Together they show the leap from tiny newborn to a sitting, giggling one-year-old.
What a Baby's First Year Package Includes
Many photographers, myself included, bundle these stages into a 'baby's first year' package offered at a reduced combined price compared with booking each session separately. A package usually covers all three milestone sessions, a set number of edited images from each, and an online gallery to download and share. Some families add a print or album at the end so the full year lives somewhere other than a phone. Exact inclusions vary between photographers, so it's always worth checking what counts as a session and how many final images you receive.
When to Book Each Stage
Timing matters more than people expect. Newborn sessions are best in the first one to two weeks, so it helps to book during pregnancy and confirm once the baby arrives. The sitter session is timed to your baby's development rather than a fixed date — around six to nine months, once they can sit confidently. The birthday session can happen in the few weeks either side of the day itself. Because the first stage is so time-sensitive, securing a milestone package early gives you the most flexibility across the whole year.
What Happens During the Sessions
Each stage is relaxed and led by the baby. Newborn sessions are slow and gentle, working around feeds and sleep, often at home or in a calm studio setting. Sitter sessions are short and playful, using toys and silly noises to draw out smiles before attention runs out. The birthday session is the messiest and most fun, especially with a cake involved. As a documentary photographer based in Cambridge, I work across the whole UK and keep things unposed, so the images feel like your family rather than a stiff studio set-up.
Milestone Package vs Single Sessions
You can absolutely book any single stage on its own — plenty of families do. The advantage of a milestone or first-year package is consistency and value: the same photographer, the same look, and a combined price that's usually lower than three separate bookings. The trade-off is committing up front. If you're unsure, you can always start with the newborn session and add later stages, though booking the full package early often locks in better availability and pricing.
How Much Does It Cost?
Prices vary widely across the UK depending on the photographer, the number of sessions, and what's included in the final delivery, so treat any figure as a guide rather than a fixed rate. The main reason families choose a milestone package is that the combined price is typically lower than paying for newborn, sitter and birthday sessions individually.
